I seem to have spent a lot of today with my headset on. Two conference calls about .Net development, another ‘all-hands’ from the Global Services’ graduate leadership team, and finally, a call with a colleague to transfer the ownership of a group mailbox.

One of the strange things about BT is that you can have close working relationships with people that you have hardly, or perhaps never, met face to face. Phone conferencing was a new experience for me when I joined. It took a bit of getting used to. Nowadays, ‘I’ll see you on the call’ seems like the most ordinary phrase in the world.

It’s great when things work… I spent most of yesterday fighting with SqlServer authentication and kept going around in circles. Some of the problems are still not fixed (and I’m very greatful that there are people on the team who are more knowledgable about Kerboros than me) but today’s been a good day. For those who care, I’ve been working on a data-access layer to manage communication between our web application and the database.

I worked from home today. My team is based quite far away from where I live so I’ll often work remotely a couple of days a week. It’s really useful when you need to get stuck into a complex problem, and the rest of the team are always available through Instant Messenger (or, if we’re really old fashioned, on the phone).

The other bonus of remote working is that you can work later and still have a longer evening. I’ll probably work till 6:30pm, it’ll give me a change to tidy up my C# classes.

Hi! And welcome to this blog, created as part of BT’s graduate recruitment scheme. Hopefully, this blog will give you an insight to my work at BT.

My name’s Charles and I’m on BT’s ICT graduate stream. Since joining in September 2007, I have worked for BT Operate analysing the performance of global networks, and have also worked for BT Global Services as a SharePoint /C# developer. Currently I’m working on a database front-end for a new inventory system.
